As I was contemplating the difference between the Soul and Spirit, I started to do some research as to what other scholars and writers had to say about this subject.
What I could discern from the many different opinions I read, I distilled it down to this:
Soul
- Immaterial essence of the human body
- Animating principle
- Higher vibration than the present consciousness
- What makes the body alive and function in the world of form
There are so many references in life that talk about souls. “All souls were lost” when speaking of a ship wreak or an airplane crash. “All souls accounted for”.
It is said that when the body dies, the soul has left. Science has even tried to measure the weight of the body at the time of death to see if the soul leaving changes the numbers. This was experimentally calculated as 21 grams, even though this has been debunked by mainstream science.
Spirit
- Divine connection to the Source of Everything that Is.
- Source of great visions and dreams that inspire
- Source of our power that can translate into action
We have all heard the amazing stories of people when faced with a dire need, have exerted superhuman powers to save another from death. It can only be described as great love and compassion that would enable a man to lift a car to save a friend trapped underneath. Where did that strength come from?
These definitions seemed a little dry to me and as I contemplated deeper, I started writing, asking Spirit to dictate, which is what I often do when I am doing some journalling. I was given this:

You are present in this world as 3 aspects of the Divine, Body, Soul and Spirit, each vibrating at a different frequency. Divine Source created and brought into form everything that is YOU. As an eternal Soul, you choose to take on a body and have experiences in the material realm, much like an avatar in a video game. Your soul is responsible for looking after your body and saving you from self-annihilation as your conscious present mind has been disconnected from the knowing of who you really are and where you came from. Your Soul knows why It decided to incarnate and what It wanted to accomplish in the improv that unfolds on this planet. Most importantly, It came to express Love, the highest form of vibration in a lower vibration of existence.
Your Soul is connected to and one with your Spirit, your Divine Perfect Self that knows It’s connection to the Everything That Is. Its existence vibrates at again a higher level and is the inspiration for great ideas, visions and dreams. This aspect of you calls you to music, to art, to teaching, to designing, to whatever idea of creation you brought with you. It also knows what the Soul intended and provides means to accomplish this.
Soul is focused on navigating your body through time and space, source of emotions and experiences and Spirit encourages you to remember who you really are and your connection to the Divine Source of Everything That Is.
As the Christian faith has the concept of the Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all three in one, this idea is a metaphor of the diversity of the aspects of expression on this vibrational plane of existence.

What are your thoughts on how the three operate together in the one body, when they are operating at different frequencies and may have different needs, wants and desires?
That is a very good question. As I meditate on this union, I see fragments of the mystery through the veil of being human. So many near death experience stories speak of the conscious of being One with the Universe, being the Universe. I can’t even image, but I try. I see the metaphor of the spiral representing timelessness. I see H2O as existing as ice, water and gas as a physical representation. I hear and know the voice that guides me. My thoughts have wings but only stones fall out of my mouth – or in this case, from my fingers.
